ABSTRACT
Aggression among school-age children is a phenomenon that does affect the developmental, academic, and social interactions among this population. As such, the current study intended to examine the prevalence of aggression in school-age children in selected schools in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, Kenya. The study employed a quasi-experimental design, targeting a population of 1,845 pupils (978 girls and 867boys) from two schools. Purposive, stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to arrive at a study sample size of 156 respondents. Self-administered social demographic questionnaire (SDQ) and standardized self-report Reactive-Proactive questionnaires (RPQ) assessment tool were the data collection instruments employed by the study. The researcher used quantitative data analysis techniques for the study. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS version 22. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation and percentages were used to examine the prevalence of aggression based on gender, age and class among the pupils. To test for internal consistency of the RPQ scale, Cronbach Alpha was used while Pearson correlation test was applied to measure the relationship between aggression and socio demographic characteristics of respondents. The same was further utilized to identify the risk factors of aggression and Logistic Regression was used to assess for significance of the association between the presence of aggression and the socio-demographic predictors. The study findings revealed that the prevalence of aggression showed a statistically significant difference based on the grade levels (p=0.016) where 63% of the grade 6&7 had aggression compared to 57.9% of the grade 4&5. The study also established other aspects such as gender distribution and age of the respondent as other factors contributing to prevalence of aggression in schools. The study concluded that aggression is a prevalent issue among school-age children, and that it is associated with factors such as age, grade level, and gender. The study therefore recommended that a comprehensive approach is necessary to effectively address the issue of aggression in school-age children, taking into consideration the factors that contribute to this behavior.
