Effects of Teacher Indiscipline on School Performance in Gairo District in Morogoro Region, Tanzania

ABSTRACT
Teacher indiscipline has direct and indirect effect on school activities which is an obstacle to teaching and learning process, and the achievement of quality education. The effects are upon learners, teachers and administration in general. The purpose of the study is to examining the effects of teacher indiscipline on the school performance in Gairo district in Morogoro region, Tanzania. The study employed case study design. The study target population consisted of District Education Officers, TSD, District School Chief Inspector, School heads, Teachers and Students from different schools were selected. A study sample size of forty eight (48) respondents selected among five (5) public secondary schools in Gairo district council took part in the study. Purposive sampling technique will be used to arrive at the study sample size. Interview guides, Focus Group Discussions, Observation guides and document analysis were the major data collection tools employed by the study. The study generated mainly qualitative data collected through focus group discussion, observation, interviews and documentary search was analyzed using content analysis in order to gain verification, interpretation, illustration and description about the phenomena in the quantitative findings. In this study, data relating to causes and forms of teacher indiscipline in schools was classified and synthesized into major themes and sub-themes, and some of the arguments and explanation of respondents was presented as quotations. The research findings revealed teachers’ that teachers’ indiscipline was a major problem towards realization of quality education in public schools. Furthermore, it was indicated that teachers’ indiscipline has direct and indirect effects on students’ academic achievement, teachers’ work performance, and school administration. The study concluded that teachers’ indiscipline had negative effects on students’ academic achievement, teachers work performance and school administration. This implies that teachers’ professional misconduct is a problem and a big threat in achievement of school goals and quality of education in public schools at large.
