Abstract
Today’s organizations work in a globalized society where technology is revolutionizing everything, where social skills, emotional intelligence, era of automation and artificial intelligence, advances in human resources management has taken centre stage in not only influencing the overall success of organizations but also presenting unprecedented challenges for leadership. The increasing use of teams, innovative and outside the box thinking, cutthroat competition and the growing need to retain talent in organizations have shifted the tide away from traditional ways of management. If organizations do not adapt to changing and innovative ways of leading and managing employees, they will lose their best and brightest employees to competition and decrease their competitive advantage. The purpose of this paper is to examine the combined effect of employee characteristics, workplace conditions and leadership practices on organizational performance. The review concludes that there is a strong relationship between level of leadership practices, employee characteristics, workplace condition and organizational performance. The paper makes recommendations and calls for further research in the area in order to measure the constructs in the study in empirical work given its implications for theory, policy and practice.
