The 2018 volume of the African Research Journal of Education and Social Sciences brings to light critical issues shaping education and social systems across Africa. The articles in this issue address pressing challenges in education access, urban development, environmental impact, and the role of family structures, offering insightful perspectives and evidence-based solutions. Through these studies, this journal aims to provoke thought, inspire action, and contribute to the discourse on sustainable development within African communities.
The first set of articles examines the systemic barriers and enablers of education. Effects of Instituted Management Strategies on Enrolment in Public Tuition-Free Day Secondary Schools in Nairobi County analyzes how policy frameworks influence school enrollment in urban Kenya, shedding light on both successes and gaps in implementation. Similarly, Barriers to Girl Child Participation in Free Secondary Education in Kenya reveals the persistent societal and structural hurdles impeding gender parity in education, emphasizing the need for holistic interventions.
Environmental and social factors impacting education are explored in Effects of Noise Pollution on Students’ Learning in Selected Urban Public Secondary Schools in Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania. This study highlights the overlooked but significant influence of urban noise on student performance. Meanwhile, Influence of Physical Environment on Crime in Informal Settlements of Kibra investigates the link between spatial planning and crime, proposing strategies for safer communities.
The journal also delves into individual and community resilience. Exploring the Views of Dental Students on Community-Based Education and Service: A Case Study of Makerere College of Health Sciences in Uganda examines the role of experiential learning in bridging academic and social gaps. Complementing this, Challenges Facing Single Mothers in Bringing Up and Formation of Adolescents explores the struggles of single mothers navigating the complex task of adolescent development.
This volume underscores the interplay between education, environment, and societal dynamics. We trust these contributions will ignite meaningful conversations and actionable change in addressing Africa’s educational and social challenges.
